The SJC 87 Initiative is designed to assist war affected children in the North and East of Sri Lanka. The program aids them to gain a solid education in the fourteen nominated schools in Sri Lanka. The SJC87 Initiative promotes holistic educational development for children and youth affected by the 30 year old civil war in Sri Lanka. SJC87 Initiative is registered as a charity in NSW, Australia (registration number INC9892583, Charity fund raising number CFN/21586). We also registered as a Trust in Sri Lanka
SJC 87 initiative’s student scholarship program was initiated in October 2009 following the end of the civil war in North and East Sri Lanka. So far a total of 257 students have benefited from the scholarship program. Eligible students were identified and provided with partial and full scholarships covering accommodation and educational expenses across 15 schools in war affected areas in Sri Lanka
iNTENSIVE REVISION AND MOBILE SCIENCE LAB FOR O/L STUDENTS
There has been a series of intensive revision and past exam paper classes and mobile Science lab sessions for GCE/OL students across the Killinochchi and Mullaithivu region
A group of highly dedicated and qualified teachers from Jaffna and Colombo traveled to these schools to conduct voluntary lessons in Mathematics, English and Science. The full-day long weekend sessions were conducted over an 18- week block.
SPECIAL NEEDS CLASSES
Look at the children with emphathy. SJC87 team visited the special needS children home to understand the challenges face by the children in the Piramanthanaaru area in the Killinochchi region in Sri Lanka . The team also visited the school on to ascertain requirements for the Special needs class at the school
SJC87 initiative organised assessment sessions at Kilinochchi, Pramanthanaru Maha Vidiyala, with the help of therapists from World Vision. For the two-day assessment sessions, two specialist teachers from Orrible Trust, a Colombo based charity that runs a school for Autistic children, were asked to oversee the assessment process.
GRADE 5 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Reading Program is to promote reading habit among children by encouraging them to check out library books (Tamil and English) and read them.
The children are required to summarize the content of the books they read and they will receive scores and a awards based on scores that takes into account of the reading comprehension and number of books read by children.
Currently the reading program is running in 6 schools Nedunkeni MV, Mullaithivu, Uruthirapuram MV, Visvamadu MV, Konavil TMGS, Pirapanthan Aru MV and Mayannor Vidyalayam, and Tharmapuram MV, Killinochchi in Sri Lanka
SCHOOL BASED AGRICULTURE PROGRAM AND POULTRY FARMS

Life in Vanni region is closely linked to Agriculture. We support schools to have Agriculture and poultry farms and to teach the children . about nutritious food.
We have realised home based gardening and poultry farms are generating not only income to sustain their lives but are also good therapy for the war affected children .
